    Summer’s over…

So summer is pretty much over for me. I go back to school on Sunday. Here’s how I ended up doing with my list:

    1. GET A JOB!!!!!

    2. Do my New York City Ballet Workout at least three times a week.

    3. Learn how to make healthy food on a budget.

    4. Try something new.

    5. Finish a book.

Well you already know about my job at the hardware store. That went really well. I really liked it there, and I plan to go back over Christmas break.

Dance workout - #fail. I really need to do it at least once before I go, because I need to mad stretch out before starting dance. I’m not where I need to be.

Healthy food - I bought a cookbook that’s for college students, and I really like it. It has a variety of great recipes for all of my needs, and accommodates for how my needs may change. It also does a lot with leftovers and how those can be used.

Try something new - I did that a lot at the hardware store. I built two grills and a fire pit all by myself, I learned how to shake paint, there were just a lot of exciting new experiences for me.

Finish a book - I’m counting the cookbook. I know that’s lame. But it’ll make me feel better about myself. So hush.

I’m doing horribly with my list!

Alright so my last post was a list of goals for myself for the summer. My summer is mostly over at this point. Here’s how I’m doing…

    1. GET A JOB!!!!!

    2. Do my New York City Ballet Workout at least three times a week.

    3. Learn how to make healthy food on a budget.

    4. Try something new.

    5. Finish a book.

Yeah. Not exactly terrific. Well, the job was the most important part anyway, so I guess it’s good that I got that taken care of. I’m working at a hardware store in the center of town. I really like it there. The people I work for are really nice and I get pretty good hours. I enjoy it! But I am utterly failing at the rest of the list. In terms of the workout, I just can’t seem to get the motivation to do it. On the days that I work, I come home and I’m really tired, so the last thing I really want to do is work out, and my off days I have somehow managed to fill with activities. Hopefully I can get that to happen eventually though. The cooking has been delayed because so far I haven’t found the right cook book. I need to find one that combines a) health b) quick prep and c) price, which is kind of tricky to find. Most of the books I find only really focus on two of those three, and I seriously need all three. So that will happen once I get a chance to really look at all of my options. Trying something new I’ve probably actually done, just nothing big or exciting enough to warrant crossing off my list. And finishing a book I doubt will happen. I just have no time for it. I really truly wish I did, but I don’t know if it’ll happen. Oh well. I’m still not giving up just yet!

Summer 2011: I’ve got all this time, I might as well do something with it…

And so I shall! Omg how I wish this was the view outside my house, but it’s not. Oh well. I like my house. And I’ll be going down the Cape this summer so that will be great too. But, this isn’t about beaches or beautiful weather and all that jazz, it’s about doing something with my life!

Last Friday I got my wisdom teeth out, so for a few days I was kind of out of commission, basically just laying in bed all drugged up on Percocet and watching movies all day. I watched my Glee Season 1 DVDs at least a dozen times. But I’m doing much better now, a week later. I’m still experiencing some discomfort and I found the peanut butter and jelly sandwich I had for lunch to be a bit of a challenge (I really wanted one…I think I was being a little too ambitious), but it’s way better than it was. Anyway, moral of the story is I barely left my bed, let alone my house, for a few days, and even the past couple of days when I’ve been out of bed I haven’t really traveled much farther than my kitchen. This has made me realize how much I love doing stuff, and how I need to do a ton of it this summer! So I decided to make some goals for myself to achieve by the end of the summer to keep myself entertained and motivated, and I’ll keep y’all posted with my progress. Here’s what I came up with:

    1. GET A JOB!!!!! I’ve been applying anywhere and everywhere. I need a job. So much. Spain won’t pay for itself (I’m going to study abroad in the spring). Plus I’d like to have some fun too, like trying to get down to Pittsburgh to visit that boyfriend of mine :) I’ll let y’all know where I end up.

    2. Do my New York City Ballet Workout at least three times a week. I asked for this for my birthday a few years ago and it’s a great workout. It’s hard, and you feel awful afterwards, but it’s that kind of feeling awful that you actually feel great. I’d like to really work on my fitness this summer. I’m not out of shape by any means, but I’d like to be more in shape. I’ll include too just exactly how this affects my body.

    3. Learn how to make healthy food on a budget. Next year I’m living in an apartment off campus, and I’m not having an unlimited dining plan, which means that I’ll be doing a lot of cooking for myself. I want to learn how to make myself healthy, delicious dinners without breaking the bank. I’m a college student. I don’t have all kinds of money. But I can’t just live on macaroni and cheese. Not only am I sure I’d get sick of it, I’m pretty sure I’d gain like a thousand pounds. Whenever I made myself dinner this past year, it usually was mac and cheese. I would make it if I felt like I didn’t have time to go to the dining hall to grab food before I had to go somewhere. But I can’t make that a regular thing. So I need to learn some healthy, easy, inexpensive, and, dare I say it, fun recipes to make myself next year. I’ll share a few here!

    4. Try something new. New food, new activity, new experience, new something. I like trying new things. I’m pretty adventurous. I’ll try anything once. So I want to have a new experience of some sort this summer, and I’ll talk about it here!

    5. Finish a book. I start so many books and don’t finish them. I started reading My Sister’s Keeper. I started reading The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. Did I finish either one? No. I did not. I want to find a good book this summer and read the whole thing start to finish. I do like reading, once I find a book that I can really get into. So this summer I’ll either finish at least one if not both of those books I started, or I’ll find an entirely new book to enjoy! I’ll review it here, too. Suggestions?

    Okay so I’ve been inspired

I love this dress. Would I ever wear it? No. I would not. I am nowhere near edgy enough to pull this off. Plus, where would I ever wear it? Nonetheless, I love it. It’s edgy, it’s ballerina, it’s fun, it’s just a fantastic dress. I love it. But it’s also probably one of the world’s least practical outfits. But, who said that was a bad thing? Unfortunately, $120 is a little too much for me for a just for fun dress. Dare to dream. You can see the dress here on ModCloth, as well as a ton of other fun clothes that I’m obsessed with :)

What to do, what to do…

So I haven’t posted here in a long, long, long time. I think it’s because this blog really has no purpose. It’s sad, but true. I need to come up with some sort of reason to have this blog other than just blabbering about nothing. It worked for Jerry Seinfeld, but I don’t think it’s going to work for me. I need a purpose, a goal of some sort, a reason to be here tumbling. I need like a theme for my blog. I could resume my adventures with baking. That’s always a possibility. It could be quite fun. I like baking. But that would take a lot of time and money, and my mom doesn’t like having too many sweets in the house. But we’ll consider it. I don’t really cook enough to do a cooking blog, though I could start! Or maybe I could just get suggestions. I don’t know, what do you think?

One last thing before I go to bed! Today was the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day, so in honor of that day and of Women’s History (or should I say, HERstory (you’ll get it)) Month, here’s a song from Mr. Will Forte!

    My favorite new toy

Okay, so maybe it’s not that new, but I hadn’t blogged in a while and never mentioned what I got for Christmas! I got Buddy Valastro (aka the Cake Boss)’s cook book for Christmas! So very exciting! So far I’ve made tea biscuits, chocolate chip cookies, and vanilla cake on a couple of different occasions (once I made them as cupcakes). I’ve also used his recipes for buttercream and cream cheese frosting. His recipes are so delicious! And it’s taught me a lot of things about baking too. For example:

It’s really important to know the temperature of your batter for a cake before you put it in the oven. If it’s less than 70 degrees F or more than 74, it’ll crown, meaning that the middle part will rise up kinda funny and will have a weird color and just all around it doesn’t look good. I’ve made this mistake. It also doesn’t do anything for the taste or texture. If you don’t have a thermometer like me, just stick your finger in and make an educated guess. If it feels cool, it’s too cool. Let it get to about a room temperature feeling.

    Also,

Cake flour makes all the difference in the world! Being a college student, I’m usually way too cheap to splurge on luxury items such as cake flour, but for the first time I did it and it made such a difference! It tasted so much better than the other times I had made it and it looked better too! Cake flour even smells better than regular flour. I highly recommend using it!

Ahh too cute! Too perfect! Anyone who knows me knows that I love love love to bake for any reason at all! I love finding excuses to bake cakes, because those are just so much more fun. You get to decorate them! And these are adorable!

A myriad of musings from a pensive procrastinator

I'm Jess, I'm 20, I'm a college student, and I love my life.

“For oft, when on my couch I lie

In vacant or in pensive mood,

They flash upon that inward eye

Which is the bliss of solitude;

And then my heart with pleasure fills,

And dances with the daffodils.”
